Jack Frost nipping at your nose

One of my very favorite things in life is the warmth of the sun. Sunshine and gloriously warm days fill my heart with gladness and I think really contribute to my overall positive outlook on life.

When winter approaches, my heart fills with dread. I don't like the cold and I don't like dealing with snow. I don't like being all bundled up and shivering. And I think winter is at LEAST twice as long as is necessary.

However, that being said, when winter comes to Second Life New England, I have to admit it is a beautiful sight. At least I don't have to worry about shoveling this snow and although looking at it actually makes the real life me feel colder, its all in my imagination...isn't it?

I am participating in the estate wide winter scene in SLNE. I have removed my pretty flower garden (relunctantly!!) and changed the trees to bare branches. There is snow on the ground and the pond has frozen over. It will make a nice little ice skating rink for those who are so inclined. My roof has snow on it and a snowman has been made.

My sim is open to anyone to come explore and enjoy. There is a nice beach for relaxing and watching the sunrise. There are paths to explore and romantic dancing in the gazebo or on the frozen pond.

I'm hoping for an early Spring...so come enjoy my little winter wonderland while its still around. I'm already dreaming of the warm sun to return.  :)

The pond has iced over. brrrr

A snowman resides in front of the garden. I can't wait for the return of flowers in the Spring!

The roof of the house is snow laden.

Water flows from the waterfall onto the frozen pond.

Only in Second Life

I was just thinking about my visit to Second Life last night. And as I was remembering it, I had to laugh.

Where else would you hear a desperate cry for help from a friend who had lost their hair and needed help in finding it? Where else would you be worried because where you live was so laggy that you were stuck in place and couldn't even move? Where else would you then have concerns because your home went offline and was unavailable for nearly a half hour and you hoped it would return intact.

But all is well that ends well. Happily, my friend got every strand of hair back and looks as handsome as ever. I can again wander freely around my home. My sim reappeared and nothing was lost to the Lindens.

I love Second Life. You just never know what is going to happen next.

A New Village for SL New England

There is exciting news in the Second Life Islands of New England estate! The Marblehead sim has been reconfigured to include a new village on the ground level. If you were fortunate enough to visit the now defunct Nantucket/Mystic sims, you will be in for a pleasant surprise! The new village is very reminiscent of that, but on a smaller scale. It is a quaint area, with adorable shops and is located next door to the popular Fort Sewall Community Center. That's where all the entertainment events are held.

New England village on the Marblehead sim
Besides shops, the new village will be featuring a small marina with boat slips to rent. There will be occasional visiting sea-going vessals, such as the Mayflower, which is currently at dock there.

Currently, the Mayflower is docked at Marblehead.
If you look closely and if you are very fortunate, you might even have a mermaid sighting. I have it from a good authority that the merfolk are just as excited about the new village as us landlubbers.

The Marblehead sim also features some very nice homes for rent, as well as some parcels you can purchase. Purchased parcels will allow more prims and the ability to place you own (approved) residence.

Wouldn't you love to live in a lighthouse? This one is for rent.

I'm just so excited about our new village. I hope you'll come for a visit. And if you do, be sure to stop into my little shop called Lavender Cottage. My store features cottage style decor items, such as art work, quilts, baskets, rugs, lamps, and small wooden accessories. I've set out a box of free shirts. No, these are NOT your usual SL tee-shirts. This are high quality dual layer shirts...so be sure to stop by and get yours.

Blog Analysis

My blog has been neglected! It’s been a very long time since I have written a post. I was thinking about that today and feeling a bit guilty about it and thinking it is about time I write something. But what?

I was just looking at the stat page of my blog…the part that only I can see. It tells me how many people have viewed the blog and what links they click on to reach which articles. I can tell how many people have viewed my blog in a given day and what country is represented. I can tell what operating system they are using and what referring site got them to my blog. It’s really amazing the analysis you can do about a blog.

It also tells me which articles are getting the most traffic. By far, my article with the most traffic was the one entitled “A Random Act of Kindness” which was posted on August 25th. Because I wrote about that experience, it helps keep it fresh in my mind. I have to say that each time I go back to that Starbucks, I do remember that someone paid for my order and I often have considered paying for the person behind me in line. But I haven’t done it yet. Maybe now that I have revealed these thoughts, I’ll actually do it next time I’m there.

The second most popular article was a cartoon I posted entitled “Funny Monday” on September 12. Someone must have posted a link to that cartoon, because I got a barrage of hits on it just a couple of days ago. I looked at the cartoon again. It’s cute and funny, but I’m surprised it has generated so much traffic.

My third most popular article was “Yellow Houses with White Picket Fences”. I admit that is one of my personal favorites. Some other folks like it to, because it has continuously gotten traffic since it was posted on July 16.

Other articles have gotten a bit of hits and some none at all.

Oh well, it just goes to show that hit or miss…you never can tell. And perhaps months down the road, a post will all of a sudden become popular.

Such is the world of blogging.

Three Dead Mice

"Three dead mice,
Three dead mice,
See how they lie,
See how they lie..."

No…I don’t mean the squeaky kind of mice! I’m talking about computer mice!

I really don’t like using a touchpad on a laptop.
I really don’t like using a mouse that has a wire.
I want a mouse that is wireless!!
I want a mouse that is wireless and works for a long time!!

I opened a desk drawer this afternoon, looking for a wireless mouse for a notebook computer. I found three mice in that drawer sitting upside down with their little beam legs pointing upward. I took them out one by one to test them. You guessed it….three dead mice.

Why don’t wireless mice work for a long time? I seem to be forever replacing them. Am I too hard on the little things? Do I move them around too quickly? Place too much pressure on them? What could I be doing wrong? Maybe I forgot to set the cheese out!

Oh well….off to the store I go to get a new mouse to feed to my computer. Let’s hope the new one is happier and lasts longer than the others!

And this brings us to yet another topic....the packaging! But I'll save that for the next post.

Herding SL Cats Out of the Bag

In Second Life, just as in real life, there is a special world of pets. A virtual pet can entertain and be a companion, just as a real pet can in real life. When you go looking for a pet in SL, you will discover that there is a wide variety to choose from.

I am a cat person. I have always owned a cat since I was a young girl. So it seems logical to me that I would want a cat companion in Second Life too. I have discovered that some are beautiful to look at, but move stiffly. Some have funny antics, just like real life cats. Some sound so real…you start to look around the computer to see if there is a cat ready to pounce on you. Some have annoying meows that you can’t wait to turn off. Then there are mysterious cats too, just as there are in real life.

It has been said that cats aren’t owned, rather, they have staff! I would like to introduce you to some of the felines that I have served in Second Life.

Muffin and Red are the dynamic duo! They are currently staying with my friend, Laird, and they keep him constantly entertained. Those two cats are always together. They follow each other all around. They are playful and powerful. They can easily push any avatar around to other locations…so beware!

Spot had a short life. He didn’t seem to take well to living on a homestead sim and he easily became disjointed. He was a beautiful cat, but lives mostly in my memory now.

While exploring a Japanese sim, I kept seeing a mysterious black cat everywhere. I finally was able to coax her to come home with me. Mystery cat can be found in many places. She is often seen guarding my store Lavender Cottage. She also loves to spend time bird watching. The unusual thing about Mystery cat is that no matter what angle you look at her…she is looking back. Her eyes follow your every move. Some might find this un-nerving, but I find it endearing. I know she is always looking out for me.

Karson gave me a cat that I just can’t get out of the garbage can. His name is Felix. You would think I never feed Felix, he is ALWAYS digging in the garbage looking for left-overs. He really loves fish. I often see him peering out from under the trash can lid, as though he is ashamed to admit that he loves to spend time there.

Karson gave me another cat too. Her name is Holly and she has stolen my heart. She is very sweet. She has a lot of energy and if she isn’t sleeping on the kitchen floor (which she does often), she is zooming all around the house. She is very obedient, though, and does come when I call her. She even enjoys taking a bubble bath…the first cat I have ever known to enjoy that.

And so, even in a virtual world, a cat's a cat and that's that.

When you don't know what to blog about...

....you might end up posting cartoons!

Some ideas for a blog post are taking root in my thoughts. But until then...here is a cartoon to bring a smile to your face.

Becoming a Landlady

I was looking through my landmarks the other day and clicked on one of my all time favorites. When I landed at what used to be Blues by the Lake, I was saddened to see that it was no longer there...gone...kaput! The land had been abandoned and was completely devoid of anything. I stood there for the longest time, so tempted to purchase the land, since it overlooks a lake, which has been recently redeveloped into a beautiful fishing spot. But I caught myself just in time and didn't push the 'buy' button. Instead, I decided to go look around and see what other types of parcels are available on the Linden Mainland.

No more Blues by the Lake!  :(

Before I continue, I should explain that one of my favorite things to do in Second Life is to take properties and fix them up. I love to place houses and I love to landscape and place other decorative elements around. Some people have told me that I am good at doing this. All I know is that I enjoy it so much and I can easily lose track of time when I am happily fixing up a property.

I have never owned land on the Mainland before. I have only owned property in private estates where the tier is paid to the estate owner, rather than the Lindens. I had always considered that Mainland property was not as desirable, since you cannot control what kind of neighbors you might have and how they might develop or landscape their land.

I flew around, looking at parcels for sale (of which there are an abudance!!). Eventually, I came across a nice little area with sailable Linden water and some parcels for sale. One particular parcel seemed so perfect and located right on the shoreline. I checked the price...it seemed reasonable. I clicked on the menu to purchase the property and just held it there for a REALLY long time before I finally took the plunge and pressed the 'buy' button and immediately thought, oh no, what have I done!

I am now the owner of a parcel on the Linden Mainland!

Now, WHY do I need a parcel on the Mainland when I have beautiful property in the New England estate? That's an excellent question. And I've been asking myself the same question, actually. I thought...well, this can be a little place for me to escape. Then I realized that SL is ALREADY an escape. Do I need an escape from my escape?

Since the deed was done, I went ahead and placed a really cute little beach cottage on the property and began landscaping. I soon discovered that you cannot terraform Linden land extensively...they have built-in constraints so you cannot vary the land too much from how the Lindens created it. But you can do some tweaking...and tweaking I did. I placed trees and flowers around, some rocks with water spray and other decorative things. I stood back and admired what I had created and thought, ok...now what?

Then I had a brilliant idea! I would rent it out and become a landlady! So...I pulled out a rental box that I had created last year and never used. I already even had a group created...Schimmer Properties. I had a logo. I was set! I placed a classified ad for my Sea Haven Cottage and waited for people to beat down the door wanting to rent my little cottaage. I set a people counter out...and went back the next day to see how many had come looking. I was surprised...the count was...ZERO!  I signed and figured, oh well. I should have known better.

But less than 24 hours after I set it for rent, I did receive notice that it had, indeed, been rented. I met my new tenant and made sure she was all set up. I acted like I was experienced in the land rental business. I'm not sure I had her fooled though.

She has decorated the cottage in such a cute way! I think she will be the perfect tenant...especially for a new landlady like me. I sure hope she decides to stay for while.
Sea Haven Cottage...my first rental!

To my tenant...if you are reading this...please stay!

Incredibly Intricate Historic Libraries

I have always been a reader. I have always loved libraries...even as a small child. I would love to go to the library and search through the shelves looking for the perfect novel to lose myself in. My very first job was working in the local public library. And interestingly enough, my job now is working in the local public library.

I guess libraries are in my blood.

But as much as I love libraries, I have NEVER seen libraries like these!  I hope you will take the time to click on the link here and see these absolutely incredible libraries. They are the kind that dreams are made of!!

9/11...thoughts from a friend, part one

Ten years after the horrific events of September 11, we all can remember exactly what we were doing that day when we heard the tragic news of the attacks. A friend sent me this email and I thought I would post it today. Someone else has something to say as well, and I will post that separately. Whatever your thoughts and memories are of that day, we can all agree that it changed our lives forever.

"I was shopping when I heard about it. Then I went to an appointment with my dermatologist and told him about it. Each time I returned to his office after that, he reminisced with me that it was I who informed him of that event. The event was so horrifying because it didn't happen in a brief moment, but was horror in slow motion, as we sat watching. Because it happened so slowly, there was so much video for us to watch over and over again, not being able to tear our eyes away from the television. That made it sear into our minds, and replay and replay. It wasn't a blur, but a nasty movie that we have been compelled to watch and relive, with our eyes figuratively held open by devises, a la Clockwork Orange.

It would have been so different if we had Gore as our president, wouldn't it. This country would look so different today, I think. But what OBL sought to accomplish, he accomplished with the unthoughtful assistance of the Bush/Cheney administration, war, war and more war, a wild, animalistic thrashing out at all of our perceived enemies. Lives and billions of dollars from our national treasury, thrown into the ashes of those two towers.

Just the other night, I saw myself sitting, having a drink in Windows on the World, a lovely bar and restaurant at the top of one of the towers. It was nighttime, and the whole of Manhattan glittered beneath me. I was there on a business trip a couple of years before 9/11. I think about that now, remembering how spectacular it was sitting there, like a deity. I also think about a trip I took to the British Virgin Islands, a few months after 9/11, and sitting having lunch, and got to talking to a young couple from NYC. The guy was an attorney, whose law firm was located in the WTC. He was late to work that day, and missed the horror, because his little daughter was going to preschool for the first time.

I remember the first attack on the WTC. I was there shortly after, and stayed in a hotel a block away. I saw all of the huge generators powering the building, as they repaired the damage in the lower level due to the car bomb that exploded there. I wondered then, as I stood by the tower, what would happen if it had toppled. I never expected that it would sink into the ground, but imagined that it would fall and crash into other buildings.

I look forward to this day being over. I want to forget all of those images that still play in my mind. I want it to be a footnote in my psyche, not a loop of horror. But the real horror, the bitter pill that we have to swallow, is how much this event harmed our country, and still harms it today. Ten years of war, a trillion or more dollars, all of the lives lost, our fine soldiers, the innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan, the damage to our honor, the inability of our present administration to extract us from this debilitating mess. I think about how close we came to losing our democracy, with all of the jingoism and drum beating. How this war so terrified certain people that has caused them to accept and demand an authoritarian government.

My brother was one of those people, and finally I said to him: they are a bunch of nomads living amongst the rocks of a stone age society. They hit us, but they will never be able to destroy us. He listened, and he repeated my phrase: they won't be able to destroy us.....as if that thought never occurred to him. I guess a good leader would have assured this country of that fact, instead of instilling fear as a means to forward a terrible agenda.

I could go on and on. I hope I don't feel the need to write about this day again. I want it to go away. I want my country back."

Jeanne ~ Jeannie ~ Genie

Today I was making arrangements with my friend Jeanne to attend a concert together…yes, her name is Jeanne too. Actually, there are THREE Jeannes where I work. And would you believe that my doctor’s assistant is also named Jeanne? This is quite unusual….and is the first time I have ever personally known other people named Jeanne. Pondering this today got me thinking about the commonality, or lack of, Jeanne’s in the world.

Ok, this is going to appear to be very narcissistic. But I started searching Jeannes on the internet for my own amusement. I'm not sure if this topic is blog worthy and of general interest. I figure it probably is not, but here i go anyway. Feel free to disregard this post as Jeanne promotion of the worst kind. I will understand.

The name Jeanne means “God is gracious” and in 1990 was #200 out of 4276 popular names for women. I suspect it is much less now. It can be pronounced in various ways, but my friends and I all pronounce it as ‘gee-knee’. Got that? It is NOT ‘gee-ann’.

Other spellings of Jeanne are Jeannie (I like that one. I used to spell my name like that as a teen and I would dot my ‘I’ with a little flower), and Genie (like the in-the-bottle type).

Other Jeanne facts

Hurricane Jeanne was the deadliest hurricane in the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season.

Elton John wrote about Little Jeannie:
Oh little Jeannie, you got so much love, little Jeannie
And you take it where it strikes and give it to the likes of me
Oh little Jeannie, she got so much love, little Jeannie
So I see you when I can, you make me all a man can be

Stephan Foster, the father of American music in the 19th century, wrote about Jeanie too:
I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair,
Borne like a vapor on the sweet summer air;
I see her tripping where the bright streams play,
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way.
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour,
Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er:
I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair,
Floating, like a vapor, on the soft summer air.

There are lots of Genie jokes around. Like this one for example: A man was on a beach when he discovered an old lamp in the sand. He rubbed it and a genie popped out. The genie said "I will grant you three wishes. The only condition is that you cannot wish for more wishes." "Alright," said the man, "I wish for more genies."

And there are comediennes named Jeanne. Take Jeanne Robertson for example. She has a wonderful Southern accent and is simply hilarious. Take a few minutes to listen to this.

I'm fortunate to be a Jeanne in such excellent company.

Lest you think I have totally become Jeanne-self-centered, please know that I took the self centered examination on the Happy Woman magazine website…and I passed.

Happy Labor Day

Labor Day is:
  • a day off from work, making for a long weekend
  • street parades and food festivals
  • the symbolic end of the Summer
  • the last day of the year to fashionably wear white pants
  • the beginning of football season
  • back to school time

The United States Department of Labor defines Labor Day as: "Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."

Enjoy your Labor Day!

Premium Gifts and Other Things Linden

Kiosk SLURL:   http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sandbox%20Admiranda/73/24/53
This week, Linden Labs announced some perks for premium members…furniture designed by Colleen Desmoulins of The Loft and an exclusive sandbox for premium members only. My first reaction was…how nice of them! Especially since one of my favorite stores is The Loft and I really love the creations of Colleen Desmoulins. I thought to myself…wow, she is really getting some free advertising here and I wonder if she will see an increase in sales as a result.

What didn’t really occur to me until a little later was that this whole concept is perhaps very unfair to those who create content in Second Life and then try to sell their creations. It seems unfair to be giving away quality things to all those thousands of Linden Home owners who might otherwise be purchasing them and helping the SL economy. And also unfair to the other quality builders who were not chosen by Linden Labs and will not reap the benefit of increased store traffic as The Loft probably will.

Nevertheless, I do confess that I did go get my free gift. The sofa, tables, lamps and other goodies that were given away are very nice. Most have menus to allow you to change the textures so as to better match your SL décor. Here is a picture of the sofa: I think I might end up using it in my Linden Home. Yes, I have one…I used it very occasionally as a hideaway, but it is very laggy and I cannot spend much time there.

Free furniture gift, 8 prims, made by Colleen Desmoulins of The Loft

The kiosk for the free furniture is located on the premium sandbox. When I was there, it was nearly empty. One other person was there rezzing a building. The sandbox appeared to be four sims together, so it was quite a large area.

As I explored and looked off into the distance, I became distracted by something I saw off in the Linden water. So I went to investigate and found a curious wooden rack-like thing in the water with some kind of net traps suspended from it. I’m not sure the purpose.

Nearby was a sunken, rusty submarine and strange mines attached to chains and floating in the water.

Sharks were swimming around protecting the whole area from interlopers, but I managed to befriend one of them and hitched a ride around the area.

I confess that I enjoy exploring Linden lands and water. They often have some interesting, unusual and fun things lurking around. I’m sure I will enjoy my new Linden premium gifts too.
